Abstract

Cloud computing has become one of the most important developments in modern computer science because it has transformed the traditional model of computing infrastructure, software deployment and data management. Instead of depending exclusively on locally installed hardware and software, organizations and individuals can obtain computing resources through network-based services according to their requirements. Cloud computing supports scalable storage, processing, networking and application services and has consequently become an important foundation for contemporary information systems. Its development has influenced software engineering, databases, distributed computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, Internet applications and business information systems. This research paper examines the conceptual foundations, architectural characteristics, service models, applications, benefits, limitations, security concerns and future directions of cloud computing. Particular attention is given to infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service, together with emerging developments involving edge computing, Internet of Things, serverless computing and distributed architectures. Cloud computing offers considerable advantages in terms of scalability, flexibility, resource utilization and economic efficiency, but it also introduces concerns involving privacy, data protection, service availability, vendor dependence, identity management and cybersecurity. Research published before and during 2018 demonstrates that security remained one of the central challenges affecting cloud adoption. At the same time, emerging computing paradigms were creating opportunities for extending cloud capabilities toward network edges and heterogeneous environments. The paper argues that the future of cloud computing will depend upon the integration of scalable infrastructure with secure, distributed and intelligent computational models.
