Abstract

Green chemistry has emerged as an important approach for transforming conventional chemical practices into safer, more resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible processes. Traditional chemical manufacturing has contributed substantially to economic development, but it has also generated hazardous waste, toxic emissions, excessive energy consumption, resource depletion, and persistent pollutants. Green chemistry addresses these challenges by focusing on pollution prevention at the molecular and process levels rather than treating pollution after it has been generated. This research paper examines the principles, technological innovations, applications, opportunities, and challenges associated with green chemistry and sustainable chemical processes. Particular attention is given to renewable feedstocks, safer solvents, catalysis, energy-efficient reactions, waste minimization, biocatalysis, electrochemistry, biomass utilization, and emerging approaches such as continuous-flow processing and solvent-free synthesis. The paper also discusses the contribution of green chemistry to circular economy objectives and sustainable development. Advances in catalysis, biotechnology, materials science, and process engineering are creating opportunities to redesign chemical production while maintaining economic performance. However, challenges remain regarding the cost and availability of sustainable feedstocks, scalability, technological infrastructure, life-cycle impacts, and the need for reliable evaluation metrics. The paper argues that green chemistry should increasingly be viewed not simply as an environmental strategy but as an integrated framework for innovation, resource efficiency, industrial competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.
