Abstract

Visual art provides opportunities for people to experience emotion, reflection, imagination, self-expression, and social connection. Painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, collage, installation, digital art, and museum experiences can influence psychological well-being by engaging attention and encouraging people to interpret personal and social experiences. This paper examines the influence of visual art on psychological well-being, focusing on emotional expression, aesthetic experience, stress reduction, self-reflection, social connection, cultural meaning, art participation, accessibility, and individual differences. Engagement with visual art may provide moments of pleasure, absorption, calm, curiosity, and meaning, while creating art can offer a non-verbal channel for expressing thoughts and emotions. Community and museum-based art activities can additionally create opportunities for social interaction and belonging. Evidence from arts and health research suggests that arts engagement can be associated with beneficial experiences across different populations, although outcomes vary according to the type of activity, intensity of participation, context, and individual characteristics. The paper argues that visual art can contribute to psychological well-being as a complementary cultural and social resource, but it should not be treated as a substitute for professional mental-health care when such care is needed. Greater access to inclusive visual-art programs, cultural institutions, community workshops, and creative education may help expand the potential well-being benefits of artistic engagement.
