The rapid expansion of urban areas, increasing building demand, resource depletion, and climate change have intensified the need for sustainable approaches to architectural design and construction. Buildings consume substantial amounts of energy and materials throughout their life cycles and contribute significantly to greenhouse-gas emissions, waste generation, and water consumption. Sustainable architecture and green building design seek to address these challenges by integrating environmental, economic, technological, and social considerations into the planning, construction, operation, and eventual reuse or demolition of buildings. This research paper examines major strategies for reducing energy consumption and environmental impacts through sustainable architectural practices. Particular attention is given to passive design principles, building orientation, daylighting, natural ventilation, high-performance envelopes, energy-efficient mechanical systems, renewable-energy integration, sustainable construction materials, water conservation, green roofs, intelligent building technologies, and life-cycle assessment. The paper also explores the growing role of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things technologies, building information modelling, and smart energy-management systems in improving building performance. Beyond operational energy, the study considers embodied carbon associated with construction materials and the importance of circular-economy principles in reducing life-cycle environmental impacts. The discussion demonstrates that sustainable architecture is not simply a technological response to environmental problems but represents a broader transformation in architectural thinking, in which buildings are conceived as interconnected systems within ecological and social contexts. The paper concludes that effective green building design requires an integrated approach combining passive architectural strategies, efficient technologies, renewable energy, responsible material selection, adaptive reuse, policy support, and occupant participation. Such an approach can contribute to low-carbon, resource-efficient, resilient, and healthier built environments.
