Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have emerged as two of the most influential areas of modern computer science, transforming the way computational systems process information, recognize patterns, make decisions and interact with human beings. The development of increasingly powerful processors, large-scale data storage, high-speed networks and sophisticated algorithms has created an environment in which machines can perform tasks that traditionally required substantial human intelligence. Machine learning has become particularly important because it enables computer systems to learn from data rather than relying exclusively on explicitly programmed rules. Deep learning, a major branch of machine learning, has further expanded these capabilities in areas such as computer vision, speech recognition, natural language processing, recommendation systems and autonomous systems. LeCun, Bengio and Hinton observed that deep learning had produced major advances in visual recognition, speech processing and other data-intensive applications. This research paper examines the conceptual foundations of AI and ML, their development within computer science, major computational techniques, applications, advantages, limitations, ethical concerns and future prospects. Particular attention is given to supervised learning, unsupervised learning, neural networks, deep learning and intelligent decision-making systems. The paper argues that AI and ML represent not simply technological innovations but a fundamental transformation in the design and use of computer systems. Their future development will depend upon improvements in computational efficiency, data quality, transparency, security, privacy and human-machine collaboration.
