Role of Smart Technology in Modern Architectural Design

The rapid development of digital technologies is transforming architectural design, construction, and building operation. Smart technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital twins, sensors, automation, and data analytics are increasingly integrated into the built environment. This paper examines the role of smart technology in modern architectural design and discusses its influence on design optimization, energy efficiency, building performance, occupant comfort, safety, sustainability, construction coordination, and long-term building management. BIM provides a digital information environment that can support design coordination and performance assessment, while IoT systems enable real-time monitoring of building conditions and occupancy. AI can analyze building data and support predictive control, energy management, and maintenance. Digital twins extend these capabilities by linking digital building models with real-world operational data. Recent systematic reviews indicate that the integration of BIM, IoT, AI, and digital twins is creating more integrated and data-driven approaches to smart building design and operation. However, challenges remain concerning interoperability, cybersecurity, privacy, cost, data quality, skills, and organizational readiness. The paper argues that smart technology should be treated as an integrated architectural and operational tool rather than an isolated technological addition. Effective adoption requires human-centered design, clear data standards, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous evaluation of building performance.
