Abstract

Digital citizenship refers to the knowledge, skills, values, and behaviours required to
participate safely, ethically, responsibly, and constructively in digital environments.
Social media has become an important part of communication, education, entertainment,
commerce, and civic participation, but its benefits are accompanied by risks involving
misinformation, privacy, cyberbullying, online fraud, harmful content, and irresponsible
communication. Responsible use therefore requires media literacy, privacy awareness,
respectful interaction, critical thinking, and an understanding of digital rights and
responsibilities. This paper examines nine major dimensions of digital citizenship and
responsible social media use, including digital literacy, online identity, privacy and
security, ethical communication, misinformation, cyberbullying, digital footprints, civic
participation, and future challenges.
