Structural Analysis and Design of Multi-Storey Reinforced Concrete Buildings

Multi-storey reinforced concrete buildings are widely used for residential, commercial,
institutional, and mixed-use purposes. Their structural design requires coordinated
consideration of gravity loads, lateral loads, structural configuration, material properties,
member behaviour, serviceability, durability, and safety. This paper examines the
principal stages involved in structural analysis and design of multi-storey reinforced
concrete buildings. It discusses structural planning, load assessment, analytical
modelling, design of slabs, beams and columns, lateral load-resisting systems, seismic
considerations, foundations, serviceability, durability, and construction quality. The paper
emphasizes that computer-aided analysis should be combined with engineering judgment,
code compliance, and appropriate detailing to achieve safe, economical, durable, and
serviceable structures.
