Homeopathy and Integrative Healthcare: Exploring Contemporary Approaches

Abstract

Integrative healthcare seeks to coordinate conventional and complementary approaches
around the needs of the whole person. Homeopathy is a longstanding complementary
system that remains used in several countries and has an established institutional presence
in India. This paper explores homeopathy within the broader concept of integrative
healthcare, focusing on patient-centred care, communication, individualized consultation,
patient preferences, evidence, safety, professional collaboration, regulation, and future
research. Integrative healthcare does not mean that all approaches have equivalent
scientific evidence; rather, it emphasizes coordinated care informed by evidence and
patient needs. Current scientific assessments report little evidence supporting
homeopathy as an effective treatment for any specific health condition. Some patients
nevertheless value homeopathic consultations or choose complementary approaches
because of cultural, personal, or experiential factors. Contemporary approaches should
therefore emphasize informed decision-making, transparent communication, appropriate
referral, safety monitoring, rigorous research, and avoidance of substituting homeopathy
for proven medical care.
