Abstract

Mental well-being has become an important component of contemporary healthcare as individuals and health systems increasingly recognize the effects of stress, sedentary lifestyles, sleep difficulties, and emotional pressures on quality of life. Yoga is a traditional mind-body practice that commonly includes physical postures, breathing practices, relaxation, concentration, and meditation. This paper explores the role of yoga in supporting mental well-being and examines its relevance to contemporary health practices. It discusses stress management, emotional balance, mindfulness, sleep, physical activity, quality of life, preventive health, workplace and community programmes, research evidence, safety, and integration with healthcare. Evidence from systematic reviews and health research suggests that yoga may be useful for some aspects of stress, anxiety symptoms, mood, and quality of life, although findings vary by population, intervention, and study quality. Yoga should therefore be viewed as a potentially supportive practice rather than a replacement for professional treatment of mental health disorders. Safe instruction, appropriate adaptation, informed choice, and timely professional care remain important.
