Abstract

Protein synthesis is a fundamental cellular process through which genetic information is converted into functional proteins. In eukaryotic cells, protein production involves transcription of DNA into messenger RNA, RNA processing and transport, translation by ribosomes, and extensive post-translational modification and regulation. The accuracy and regulation of these processes determine protein abundance, localization, structure, and activity. Transcriptional regulation, RNA processing, translation control, and protein degradation operate together to allow cells to respond to developmental, environmental, and metabolic signals. This paper examines nine major mechanisms of protein synthesis and regulation, including transcription, mRNA processing, ribosome function, translation initiation and elongation, protein folding, post-translational modification, translational control, protein degradation, and disease relevance. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for explaining cellular differentiation, adaptation, homeostasis, and disorders caused by altered gene expression or protein quality control.
