Analytical chemistry provides the scientific methods required to identify, measure, and interpret chemical substances in environmental samples. Air, water, soil, sediments, and biological materials may contain pollutants at concentrations ranging from major constituents to trace and ultra-trace levels. Modern analytical techniques allow environmental scientists to detect contaminants, determine their concentrations, identify chemical transformations, and assess changes over time. Techniques including chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, electrochemical analysis, and atomic spectrometry are widely used in environmental monitoring. This paper examines nine major applications of analytical chemistry in environmental monitoring, including air quality assessment, water and soil analysis, trace contaminant detection, heavy-metal analysis, pesticide monitoring, emerging pollutants, quality assurance, risk assessment, and future analytical technologies.
