Abstract

Microbial biotechnology uses microorganisms and their enzymes, metabolites, and genetic systems to produce useful products and perform industrial processes. Bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and other microbes are used in fermentation, pharmaceutical production, food processing, enzyme manufacture, biofuels, agriculture, and environmental applications. Advances in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, fermentation technology, and downstream processing have expanded the range of products that can be produced biologically.
