Homeopathy and Its Place in Complementary and Traditional Health

Abstract

Homeopathy is a historical system of complementary medicine that has been practiced in many countries and remains part of the healthcare landscape in some regions, including India. It is based on concepts such as individualization and the use of highly diluted preparations. This paper examines the place of homeopathy in complementary and traditional healthcare, focusing on its historical development, principles, patient preferences, consultation practices, integration with health services, regulation, safety, and scientific evidence. Particular attention is given to the distinction between cultural and traditional use and claims of clinical effectiveness. Current evidence does not establish homeopathy as an effective treatment for specific health conditions beyond placebo effects, and some homeopathic products may still pose risks through ingredients, contamination, or interactions when they are not truly inert. The paper emphasizes informed patient choice, transparent communication, appropriate regulation, and the importance of not delaying evidence-based diagnosis or treatment.
