Homeopathy and Integrative Healthcare: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

Integrative healthcare seeks to coordinate conventional biomedical care with selected traditional and complementary approaches in ways that are patient-centred, safe, and supported by appropriate evidence. Homeopathy is a long-established complementary system used in several countries and formally recognized within India's pluralistic healthcare environment. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges associated with considering homeopathy within integrative healthcare. It discusses patient-centred care, communication, shared decision-making, accessibility, cultural preferences, research, professional coordination, regulation, safety, and evidence. The paper emphasizes that integration should not mean treating all therapies as equally effective. The World Health Organization's current Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 calls for integration of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine into health systems when approaches are safe and effective, while strengthening the evidence base and appropriate regulation. citeturn0search0turn0search1 Major scientific assessments have not established homeopathy as an effective treatment for specific medical conditions beyond placebo effects.
