The Integration of Ayurveda with Modern Healthcare Systems

Abstract

The integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare has received increasing attention as health systems seek patient-centred, preventive, culturally responsive, and evidence-informed approaches to care. Ayurveda is a longstanding Indian system of health knowledge that includes lifestyle practices, dietary guidance, herbal medicine, therapeutic procedures, and individualized approaches to health. This paper examines the integration of Ayurveda with modern healthcare systems, focusing on complementary care, preventive health, patient-centred practice, research, professional collaboration, education, regulation, safety, and future prospects. It argues that responsible integration requires clear clinical boundaries, scientific evaluation, quality assurance, trained practitioners, communication between healthcare professionals, and informed patient choice. Ayurveda may contribute to selected areas of health and wellness, but integration should not involve replacing established medical diagnosis or treatment with unsupported traditional claims.
