Abstract

Ecological succession describes predictable changes in the composition and structure of biological communities over time. It occurs when environmental conditions change naturally or following disturbances such as fire, storms, agriculture, mining, flooding, or human development. Primary succession begins where soil and biological communities are largely absent, whereas secondary succession occurs where disturbance leaves soil, nutrients, seeds, or other biological legacies. This paper examines nine major dimensions of ecological succession, including primary and secondary succession, pioneer organisms, soil development, species interactions, disturbance, biodiversity, ecosystem recovery, human-assisted restoration, and future ecological management.
