Abstract

Holistic health and wellness emphasize the interconnected physical, psychological, social, behavioural, and environmental dimensions of health. Alternative and complementary medicine has attracted growing interest within this broader whole-person perspective, although individual practices differ substantially in evidence, safety, and clinical purpose. This paper examines the role of alternative medicine in holistic health and wellness, focusing on whole-person care, preventive behaviour, physical and mental well-being, lifestyle management, patient-centred care, cultural traditions, integrative healthcare, evidence, and safety. WHO defines traditional medicine as systems and practices arising from diverse historical and cultural contexts and describes complementary medicine as additional healthcare practices outside mainstream medicine. Its 2025–2034 strategy emphasizes evidence, safety, regulation, people-centred care, cultural respect, and appropriate integration. NCCIH similarly describes integrative health as combining conventional and complementary approaches with an emphasis on treating the whole person rather than a single organ or disease. Evidence supports some complementary approaches for selected outcomes, while many other practices require further research. The paper argues that alternative medicine can contribute to holistic wellness when specific practices are evaluated individually and used safely as complementary options rather than substitutes for proven medical care.
