The Psychological Appeal of Astrology in Contemporary Society

Abstract

Astrology continues to attract attention in contemporary society despite the dominance of scientific explanations of personality and behaviour. Its popularity can be understood not only through belief in prediction but also through psychological processes involving self-reflection, identity, uncertainty management, meaning-making, social interaction, and perceived reassurance. This paper examines the psychological appeal of astrology by considering personality descriptions, the search for meaning, uncertainty, emotional reassurance, identity formation, social belonging, confirmation processes, digital astrology, and critical perspectives. Astrology may provide individuals with narratives that help them organize personal experiences and discuss aspects of identity and relationships. Broad and relatable descriptions can also encourage individuals to recognize themselves in astrological statements. Digital platforms have expanded access to these narratives and made astrology part of everyday social and entertainment culture. At the same time, psychological appeal should not be confused with scientific validity. Astrology has not been established as a reliable method for predicting personality or future events. The paper argues that its contemporary appeal is better understood as a cultural and psychological phenomenon shaped by human needs for meaning, coherence, identity, and social connection.
