Citizenship and Its Importance in a Democratic Society

Abstract

Citizenship is an important foundation of democratic society because it defines the relationship between individuals and the political community to which they belong. Citizenship involves legal rights and protections as well as responsibilities such as obeying laws, respecting the rights of others, participating in public life, and contributing to the community. In democratic systems, active citizenship supports political accountability, social inclusion, civic trust, and responsible governance. This paper examines nine major dimensions of citizenship and its importance in a democratic society, including citizenship rights, duties, political participation, civic responsibility, equality, social cohesion, civic education, digital citizenship, and contemporary challenges.
