Astrology in Modern Society: Beliefs, Practices, and Perspectives

Abstract

Astrology has remained a visible cultural practice despite major changes in science, technology, communication, and modern lifestyles. In contemporary society, astrological beliefs and practices appear in traditional consultations, newspapers, websites, mobile applications, social media, entertainment, and personal self-reflection. This paper examines astrology in modern society by exploring its historical continuity, contemporary beliefs, everyday practices, digital transformation, cultural significance, psychological appeal, social relationships, commercial development, and critical perspectives. Astrology may provide individuals with symbolic frameworks for interpreting uncertainty, identity, relationships, and future possibilities. Its modern popularity is partly supported by digital platforms that make personalized horoscopes and birth-chart interpretations readily accessible. At the same time, astrology occupies a contested position because its interpretations are not equivalent to scientifically validated explanations or psychological assessments. The paper argues that astrology can be meaningfully examined as a cultural and social phenomenon while recognizing the distinction between personal belief and empirical evidence. Modern astrology is therefore best understood through multiple perspectives involving culture, identity, communication, technology, commerce, and personal meaning.
